Bohca, literally meaning “strangled bundle”, is a square piece of cloth that has been used to wrap clothing for centuries as an inseparable piece of the Anatolian way of life. Some unique examples surviving from ancient times are now kept in museums while the tradition is still widely practised in Anatolia.. Women going to the Turkish baths (hamam), the bride’s family receiving presents prior to the marriage, and the village girls leaving home to marry their lovers despite their parents’ refusal carry their goods wrapped in bohca.
These wrapping cloths were also used during the Ottoman Empire, when the Grand Vizier and other officials of high rank presented valuable gifts to the Sultans at imperial weddings and religious ceremonies.
